Yi Tong is a young leaf carving artist. During his college years, he accidentally came into contact with the ancient and exquisite art of leaf carving and was captivated by its profound craftsmanship demonstrated within a small space. The traditional wet carving technique is delicate and grand, but its expressive power is often insufficient. Since then, he has devoted himself to research, determined to make up for the lack of details in traditional wet carving through knife carving.
He also got to know Master Lü, a leaf carving artist. Under Master Lü’s careful guidance, he systematically learned the basic techniques and creative concepts of leaf carving, laying a solid foundation. In pursuit of higher artistic achievements, he later formally became a disciple of Sun Yongqing, the inheritor of the intangible cultural heritage of Yangzhong paper-cutting art in Jiangshi City, Jiangsu Province. He conducted in-depth research and absorbed the composition, knife techniques, and imagery of paper-cutting art, integrating them into his own leaf carving creations, thus forming a unique personal style. He joined the Yangzhong Folk Artists Association and actively participated in the protection activities of intangible cultural heritage organized by the municipal cultural department.
His works use leaves as paper and knives as brushes to tell Chinese stories. He depicts local ancient buildings on the natural texture of the leaves, promotes local culture, and combines exquisite craftsmanship with profound humanistic feelings.
